As previously mentioned, a 'Timing Light' is a device used to measure the ignition timing angle, allowing us to adjust the ignition timing to be suitable for the type and quantity of fuel. Moreover, the installation of additional forced induction systems or the replacement of camshafts also requires adjustment of the ignition timing angle to be 'just right'—neither too advanced nor too retarded—to enable the engine to generate power at its full potential.

Normally, a Timing Light relies on signals from the spark plug coil. It then calculates the engine RPM and uses a lighting system to illuminate the pulley, allowing the measurement of the ignition timing position
Generally, the working principles and usage of timing lights are almost identical. In this instance, we will demonstrate the basic working principles using the widely popular INNOVA (3551) timing light, so readers can get a clear picture.
1. Connect the positive and negative terminals of the timing light to the positive and negative terminals of the car battery.
2. Clamp the signal clamp onto the number one spark plug wire.
3. Disconnect the vacuum advance hose to prevent compensation of the ignition timing angle.
4. Loosen the distributor adjustment clamp to allow for adjustment while the engine is running.
5. Start the engine, check, and adjust by observing the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley.
The position of the top dead center (TDC) mark may vary depending on the engine model.
High-quality timing lights, such as the INNOVA Pro Digital Timing Light (5568), feature a digital display to show engine RPM, battery status, and can also indicate Dwell Time/Angle. Dwell Time/Angle refers to the duration (or angle) during which the primary coil charges to prepare the ignition spark for the spark plug.

For stock engines without modifications, adjusting ignition timing to match manufacturer-recommended specifications helps the engine run smoother, improves fuel efficiency, and increases overall mileage by optimizing fuel combustion.
For modified engines, proper ignition timing adjustment is crucial. Especially for tuned engines with modified fuel quantities (such as injector upgrades or fuel pump changes) or different fuel types (like higher ethanol blends such as E20 or E85), correct ignition timing ensures optimal engine performance. It helps maximize power output and reduces the risk of engine knock, which can cause significant damage, particularly in high-performance engines.
